Greetings, Obsidianites!

Aleksander had the fine suggestion of holding a banner competition, so I thought it would be fun - particularly as BB is looking to recruit new players and eventually reenable shard voting in future.

The theme is Obsidian's ten year anniversary, and you must include the http://www.obsidianshard.com URL. Feel free to point out that we are the longest running shard online, or anything else you'd like to include. I'd recommend reading through some of BB's announcements to get you fired up!

Rules

The image dimensions must be 468 x 60. This is the banner size used on the shard vote listings.

• Maximum File Size is
• 200KB for an animated signature (use GIF format)
• 50KB for a non animated signature (use JPEG format)

If you decide to create an animated signature, you MUST submit a non-animated version too. This is so that we can use the non-animated version on the boards and potentially the animated version on topshards. I don't want my eyes bleeding from animated signature banners all over the forums

The competition will be open for two weeks to give you adequate time to find inspiration and make your banners.

Prizes

The winner shall receive a trophy with their name on and the competition details, plus a vanquishing weapon of their choice (you can choose the type, the weapon will have random properties to be identified).

The runner up will 'just' receive a vanquishing weapon.

This means that because this is a special contest to benefit the shard there are two opportunities to get a quality Vanq weapon as well as that unique trophy!

To enter, simply upload your banner somewhere and display it in a post below in this thread using [img]IMAGE%20URL[/img]. If you make a banner but have any problems uploading or displaying it please send me a PM.

I am not sure on how to get exact dimensions. On photobucket it does not allow me to go as high as 460 wide for some reason. Jerks! lol

Edit: Okay I got it figured out now. I am just adding all my banners into one comment. Check back in for updates.

would have to keep in mind about the copyright of your images aleksander,
its not like if you could grab anyone's images and advertise for out shard with them.

and yeah i was kinda confused about the ''frist'' thing, after a google search i ended up thinking it was a mistake

couple questions for Thassius:

how many banners can one summit to the contest?
when you say no animated banner on the forum here, do you mean u dont want animated ones in our signatures but still can post them in this topic here, or you dont wana see them on the board at all ?
and when is the last day for us to send banner in for contest ?

For copyrights it does not matter unless it is from a game website. Other people would never see it. It is only UO. A very outdated game that advertises to a niche market. Also, if there was a problem with copyright anything, the person would send an email to admin and it would simply be removed. Since no money is being made from the use of the image or the game, there would be no damages.

In other words don't be such a stick in the mud.

Visit the top100 site and tell me how many actually use graphics made by themselves. Give me a break.

Anyways have fun lol.

Yeah that old UO image of the dragon and all is widely used on free shards.

I wonder if just the word "Ultima" is OK? I would love to see the old retro Ultima font in an Obsidian banner.

My idea for the contest kind of revolves around that.

Of course Ultima is. It is the name of the game lol. Just have fun with the banners. It should be okay so long as you don't start using WoW graphics or something lol. Or, game graphics that are not from our version of Ultima Online, that is if you use graphics at all in your banner.
At first I tried to use something that Frazetta painted, but once stretched out into that little strip it just looked funny. That guy is the best for his paintings of the fantasy realm.

Don't worry about any infringement lol. As long as it is not blatantly trying to use another famous image to promote Obsidian it should not matter in the least.

To answer questions:

In terms of infringement, don't worry too much as long as there is nothing 'blatannt'. I initially didn't want the word ultima ie 'free ultima online shard' in there at all, but Echo disagreed so we'll allow it for the time being. At the end of the day, if BB is unhappywith anything produced then I'm sure we can always ask the winner to make a few changes etc?

For posting in this thread, yes please stick all the bnners animated or otherwise iin here. I can't see the bandwidth readers will need to load it being any more than, say... The post your pic thread.

made it with a transparent background so it looks shitty on the dark background, looks good on a white background though!
