sadly people attempt to kill chips (meph,judas) but somehow they always fail LOL even if they gank,, which is kinda sad.....

Iori and chips are both correct, you can test it by trying to sell to a vendor or dying. Dying is foolproof, you either have it or you don't when you res.

I have not seen a dropped spell book in a couple of years, so they may not drop anymore. But I have seen them dropped by orc mages and the mages in wrong. Ii just trashed my last book that was not newbied.

A couple of my chars have spell books, and none of them started as a mage, so they did not get it when the char was created. When I later decided to train a little magery on them I bought a book from a npc vendor, it is newbied.
