Considering (for comparison) the Lineage 2 client is 2GB I don't think the Obsidian client can be considered 'large'... unless you are a noob with dial-up in which case, GET BETTER INTERNETS.

Considering when I started the patch for Obsidian was ~8 MB, I'd say it was quite an increase.

That's a pretty bad comparison as well, as L2 is fully 3 dimensional, where UO still has the top-down 2D view. I know it's not a large file, but for something that started off so small, it ballooned up (not saying it wasn't without reason).

ya i doubt u will see these graphics on obs to much work and no one to do the work sphere shards will hurt from this but. Only runuo - fully patched shards will have these new graphics. I havent heard of any sphere shards trying to incorporate this into there shards but i may be wrong.

even the the main runuo shards have talked about how hard it would be.. they probably won't even be able to do it.

and if a shard that has constant 24/7 work being done to it can't handle these new changes, then do you honestly think that OBS will get the changes?

no the way i understand it is all fully patched shards will get the new graphics with no changes mase to the shard/ which means no work for fully patched shards. Its all automatic if u are fully patched but sphere shards run on diff clients and arent fully patched, so runuo shards will have these graphics but sphere shards prolly wont.

edit: what i am trying to say is runuo shards will have to work to keep the graphics out, and sphere shards will have to work to get the graphicss, personally i think it looks shitty, but we will see when it comes out

Yeah whereas RunUO is suposed to be "the easy server" to run, from what I've been hearing runUO2.0 has given a LOT of work to the shard owners to do. They spent forever releasing it, and it is incomplete to OSI standards in many respects.

Where did I even try to imply it was a bad thing? The only "bad" thing I mentioned would be a noticeable file-size increase, which I said had its own reasons (meaning it isn't just fluff, it serves a purpose, and thus is useful).

You talk like you know a lot panda.. haven't snorted your brain cells away?

It is more than possible for Obsidian to use that client, not to mention, all those "top of the line runuo" shards, will easily be able to use them, because this client is being made FOR UO.. retard.. they aren't gunna make a client that doesn't work with the game.. it's probably just a huge item and verdata patch..

What ashes is missing is that the client itself is being redesigned, not just the graphics. Which means they may or MAY NOT be using the same server software. I would expect that a massive server overhaul will accompany this, and the client rollout is actually required due to changes in how they want the servers to work, rather then they just wanted to re-do the client to make it work better.

Over time and the various upgrades to UO, the files have become bloated and the original structures for additions and for extra features have started to become limiting factors in expansion. Both server-side and client-side.

To summarize for those who don't like lots of text:

New client does NOT guarentee compatibility because the server itself may change.
Just because the clients are similar doesn't mean we'd be able to get it working on obsidian, or any other shard, despite it's emulator.
It depends on what OSI does and how much they change in their server software. Not if, not when, how much.

As I said, i'll see what can be done if i have the spare time when it rolls out, but i make no promises.

As for our current patcher size: We still could do a patch that is around... maybe 50 mb. I'd have to look at what's in the current one. However most people do not have Ultima Online or have troubles with the addition based patch, so it's easier to just do a full install patcher.

3D graphics engine has nothing to do with it, I still don't consider around 400mb to be large for a standalone game installer.

400 mb may not be large, i'm not arguing that for a full game. What I'm saying is a comparison between the original patch when I joined and the patch today is a massive difference (4,900% increase).
