Animal Taming

Skill details:

  • Animal Taming is the skill used for taming animals, agreesive animals, and tamable monsters.
  • The Taming skill is influenced by STR and INT.
  • Not all animals and monsters are tamable.
  • Your ability to tame a particular creature is based on your real skill. If you do not meat the minimum requirement to tame a creature you can't even attempt to tame it. The further above the minimum required the faster/easier it will be to tame.
  • Taming is difficulty-based, this means you have to tame creatures of increasing difficulty to keep gaining.
  • You will not gain skill on animals you have already tamed. Even if you release an animal and tame it again there is no possibility of re-taming it. If you leave and come back to the animal over a period of time the animal will forget you and you can get further skills gains off of it.
  • Here is the list of commands used for tamed creatures:
Command Effect
"(All/Name) come" Summons all or one pet to your location.
"(Name) follow" Follows targeted being.
"(Name) friend" Gives co-ownership to targeted player.
"(Name) guard" Makes the specified pet guard a target.
"(All/Name) kill", "(All/Name) attack" All or the specified pet(s) currently
under your control attack the target.
"(Name) release" Releases pet back into the wild
(removes "tame" status).
"(All/Name) stay" All or the specified pet(s) will stop
and stay in current spot.
"(All/Name) stop" Cancels any current orders to
attack, guard, or follow.
"(Name) transfer" Transfers complete ownership
to targeted player.
  • Leaving your pet in your house is not an option. It will lose loyalty rapidly once you are not in line of sight and once it is wild you are out of luck. So what to do with your pet while you don't need it or when you want to log out? The answer: stable it! The stablemaster is available at the entrance to the vendor lodge. To stable a pet say "stable", to get a pet from an NPC say "Retrieve". There is no cost for stabling any number of pets. You can only stable 11 animals at a time with a the stablemaster.

Skill usage:

First thing to do is to go get a Taming Stone from the Runestome chamber. Type .help or access the help menu and travel to the runsetone chamber. There you will find a Taming Stone Dispenser.
(Note: it has been moved slightly since this screenshot)
Taming Stone Dispenser

You will only ever have to do this once. It will put a non-movable stone in your pack. If you don't like where it is, just keep removing and re-adding it until you like where it is in your pack.
Taming Stone

Find a wild animal. Use the taming stone on the animal.
Taget the animal's body, name, or use the targeting window.
Targeting a Hind

Once you target the animal you will start taming it.
You will get messages above you head like:
"Here Hind", "Good Hind", "I won't hurt you",
"I've always wanted a Hind like you"
Here Hind

If it is an animal that is above your skill level you will get a message
that tells you what skill level is needed to tame that animal.
