After the Second World War, there was a new immigration policy in Australia that encouraged alot of southern europeans to migrate to Australia. Most of them were Greeks and Italians. They often faced resentment from the established Australians of Anglo-Celtic backgrounds. The term they were often referred to was 'wog' - a derogatory and insulting term. A wog is a slang term for a tummy ache or something of the sort and it eventually became the offensive word when the established Australians referred to the Greeks and Italians as wogs.

Probably means something different all over the world.

Most dictionaries say "wog" either possibly or likely derives from the generic term golliwog after the Golliwogg, a "grotesque" blackface minstrel doll-character from a children's book published in 1895.

As such, in Britain it is (most commonly and seriously) seen as a severe racist slur against black people.
