Yes, food is a must. To check your hunger level, type .hungry and press enter. The basic levels are starving, very hungry, hungry, fairly content, content, fed, well fed, and stuffed. Here is some info for food. Most people seem to like fish steaks, since they weigh light. They don't fill you much each and therefore you can control your hunger level the best. If you want to be completely stuffed, I reccomend sheafs of hay, but they are heavy, so store some in the bank. Sheafs of hay can be bought at produce shops. The one in Britain is located to the right of the large stone magery shop on the north end of the town. Be sure to feed your animals like your horse so that they stay loyal to you. I reccomend sheafs of hay for animals. Simply take the sheafs of hay and drag it over the animal. You seem to get better stat/skill gains when you are not stuffed. I personally fill myself to the hunger level of well fed, then go down to content, and then refill myself to well fed for when I am training my characters. I hope this helps.
