Everyone either not being able to connect to server or getting client crashes, that's because your internet connection is sending the patcher cached version of the version data and connection data. To fix this (and I'm gonna add this to my troubleshooting guide).
Open internet explorer
Tools > Internet Options...
Click Settings... under the "Temporary Internet Files" heading
Click Every visit to the Page under "Check for newer version of stored pages:" heading
Click Ok
Click Ok
Close internet explorer
Try again
Alternatively you could dump your temporary internet files as already stated in my troubleshooting guide.

Done both as well and still getting the "Couldn't connect to Obsidian" message.
My default browser is FireFox. Could this affect me? Tried clearing the cache from that too though.
Thanks for any help you can give

Your default browser is irellivent. My patcher uses the same connection technologies as IE and bases it's default settings based on that IE's internet settings. Again like I said before you people have a problem with a proxy server caching files so as far as my patcher thinks, there is not updates available because your proxies are giving you cached versions of the connection data file and the patch version info data file. So since your patcher isn't patching you to the latest client version you are crashing when you get to the client. Really there's not much I can do if your internet proxy is lying to my patcher.

So why isn't my proxy requesting the new data when I've changed the settings? Worst case scenario, how long do I wait before the proxy considers the data obsolete and requests a new copy?
Forgive me if you have no way of answering these questions without more information, but I have little to no knowledge of networking.
Thanks anyway
**UPDATE**
Actually ignore that, I just got it working. Went through your Troubleshooter and I hadn't got a proxy.txt file made up. That seems to have fixed it. Worth mentioning that I was working fine without it before.
Thanks anyway for the help in here and the the troubleshooting guide of ?ber-goodness

This was never an issue with the old client and patcher..so is there something very different with the new ones that makes it susceptible to this problem?
Today I get the failure to ping error in the patcher and the obs client crashes on entering the password. Note that this happens around the same time as yesterday (afternoon till about 3am GMT +8).
I'm not so sure about this, but proxy servers usually cache only web data isn't it? Not pinging and routing information right? Because when I fail to log in the patcher will report that pinging the server fails.
Hopefully this won't become a daily affair..sigh..
Thanks for the help and speedy fixes to our problems though

Zounds this was never an issue with the old client/patcher because honestly the old patcher never updated anything. It was really old, had memory holes, added no additional security to the login process, could be circumvented, and really was useless (oh yeah and BB lost the source code). It checked really just 2 files and made sure they were up to date. The current patcher patches currently something like 20 files and can dynamically patch anything BB tells it to. Plus BB makes changes to client all the time now where as before he might have made changes once a year. It also allows bb to dynamically change what server/port the server is running on because there is a connection data file that tells the patcher that tells the client where the server is running.
And yes the proxy is caching the data file on our webserver that tells the patcher what IP/port the server is running on (which changes). So if you proxy server is giving it old information it won't be able to ping the server/port.

Sorry to say this, but I'm pretty sure there's something wrong server-side. I can't get on at all either. It either can't connect, or can't even login. I tried CyberVic's trick, and also this was all working just fine only yesterday.

Yep...working fine a couple of days ago for me.
It's not the proxy - I don't use one.
And it's not cached information - I've wiped the whole lot.
