Iori and chips are both correct, you can test it by trying to sell to a vendor or dying. Dying is foolproof, you either have it or you don't when you res. I have not seen a dropped spell book in a couple of years, so they may not drop anymore. But I have seen them dropped by orc mages and the mages in wrong. Ii just trashed my last book that was not newbied. A couple of my chars have spell books, and none of them started as a mage, so they did not get it when the char was created. When I later decided to train a little magery on them I bought a book from a npc vendor, it is newbied. |
