As for why we don't have the computer auto fix stuff like this, we do.
If the shard dies or its a software issue, it is setup to kill and recover.
For whatever reason, the entire server is offline/unconnectable, both the game server and various other things running on it. It could be an isp issue, it could be a hardware failure, but if it coulda been recovered via software, rest assured i've talked bb into usually having stuff setup to do just that.
Hence why we've had relatively little software-based downtime over the past few years, normally its connection related.
As for the phone alert approach, i am sorry for the delay on getting to this, my old script that is setup to do just that, didn't, due to me not having updated it when we switched over some of the nameserver stuff a few months ago. Normally i get a nice little message within an hour or few of any shard downtime.
